The Best Organic Bedding

Are you interested in organic bedding? Here, I'll be describing reasons to select organic cotton sheets and pillowcases as well as organic cotton or wool blankets.

As I browsed Amazon's listings of organic sheets, I noticed the name Magnolia Organics kept turning up. So here is a page at Amazon that has sheets of many colors and different sizes. I liked it that they not only use all-organic cotton but they also use an eco-friendly method of manufacturing.

These are sets of a flat sheet, a fitted sheet, and 2 pillowcases.

There is something called the Global Organic Textile Standard (or GOTS), and Magnolia Organics products meet these standards.

For years, a great deal of organic cotton was an unbleached off-white color but now there are eco friendly dyes, like the ones used to create this variety of colors.

The farmers in India that grow the cotton don't have to suffer from insecticide exposure.

With 25% of all insecticides used on cotton, by going organic you can contribute to a better life for the farmers who grow cotton and to healthier soil.

This video shows how that works. The comment that has stuck with me is that a farmer shown spraying with chemicals only has a cup of water to clean himself with, due to the water conditions in his village.

If you intend to move more in an organic direction as money allows, consider starting with a set of organic pillowcases. Both cotton and silk are listed here. Since you breathe right next to the pillowcases all night, it's good to have something chemical-free right there!

I'd Call It a Pillow Cover

I ordered two of these pillow cases from Amazon, and they are indeed very densely woven. Each one was packaged in its own little cotton bag, which I am sure will be handy for something else. The difference in the fabrics was obvious right away, as the bags were much more loosely woven.

I washed and dried them. Then I had an unusual use for them. We had a llama ranch quite a few years ago, and I still have some bags of carded llama wool. So I made us each a pillow by stuffing in the wool and zipping up the barrier cloth cover. Then I put a pillowcase (organic!) over the new pillows.

1. It is much better for the planet and for the farmers who grow cotton or care for sheep.
2. It is better for your health. As you know, your face is right next to your pillowcase while you sleep. So you are breathing in purer air if the fabric next to you is purer. Did you know that the chemical formaldehyde is used to make conventional sheets more wrinkle-free?
3. Organic fibers are naturally non-allergenic. (Well, wool can make me itch, but as a general principle this is true.)

I enjoyed learning a bit of history, that cotton growing in Turkey goes back centuries. I didn't know what a dominant place in contemporary organic cotton growing Turkey has.

(Since I was once in love with a Turk who wanted to marry me and take me back to his homeland, I have always had a special interest in Turkey, even though I have lost track of the fellow.)

But this is interesting regarding the organic cotton growing too.
