San Francisco's Psychedelic Sixties: A Photographic Trip with Kelly Hart
A Photo Book on the Sixties in the Bay Area
In the 1960s, a shy young photographer roamed around Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco, taking photos of street scenes. Kelly Hart was particularly intrigued by persons of color, as he hadn't been around them much in his life before then.
His older sister Alexandra and her husband Roland were in the thick of the psychedelic revolution going on, and they put on dance performances that Kelly photographed. He even had some of his pictures published in Playboy.
After I married Kelly in the 1970s, I saw many of those photos. But mostly they just sat in his files. Then recently he got a scanner that was good for scanning photographs, and he got the idea to bring out a book.
Photo credit: This is one of Kelly's photos from the book, used with permission. There are more of his pictures below, also of course with his okay. It shows a technique he used a lot in the psychedic imagery.

Kelly Hart's sensitivity to the world around him comes out in this book. Since he was in the thick of the 1960s Bay Area events, many of these photos evoke the era.
At first he priced it at the conventional 19.95 but then he realized it would suit the theme better if he made it $19.65, so that is what it sells for!
At First...
Initially, Kelly was taking black and white portraits, inspired by the work of photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Dorothea Lange as well as the famous Family of Man collection.
